why do schizophrenia patients develop lung cancer and other problems from smoking less than non schizophrenia?

Ok, doing a very detailed paper on schizophrenia. Found in 2 different sources (as well as by my psych teacher) that Schizophrenia sufferers smoke more, due to a chemical in cigarettes that helps stabilize their delusions, ect. If you happen to know what chemical that is, it’d also be great, but what I really want ot know is WHY schizophrenic patients develop less medical issues from smoking, compared to smokers without schizophrenia? Does anyone know why?

See link below for excerpt about nicotine and it’s effect on dopamine, which is the main neurotransmitter system implicated in schizophrenia. I can also confirm that schizophrenics smoke more. I just read that fact last night. I’ve also including an in-depth study on nicotine dependency amongst schizophrenics.
