If the tax on cigarettes is for the public health system, why aren’t they providing smoking cessation aids?

December 28th, 2009 : Category: News

If the cigarette tax is supposed to deter people from smoking, why aren’t they using any of the revenue from the tax to provide low income people that use the public health system with smoking cessation aids to help them quit?

If they truly wanted people to quit, wouldn’t it make sense to provide those that can’t afford 7 a month on chantix or on patches or gum those products to help them quit?

Are they truly interested in helping people quit or is this just a money grab from people with an addiction?
Wow… a goverment website so that you can READ about how to quit.

So, now, anyone with an additction can just read how to quit and they are done with it?

Sweet… I guess all those drug addicts can just read about how to quit and all is well.

Good thing we can get rid of those rehad centers, those things cost a fortune.

smoking cessation and jogging?

December 21st, 2009 : Category: News

I used to smoke and trained while I was younger (swimming and running). Then I got pregnant, stop smoking, and had two more children. Then I did the unthinkable 3 years ago I started smoking again. Now slowly approaching my 30 I decided to stop smoking and rewarded my self with a new car. Since it didn’t work I looked at what motivated me before, so I decided to start jogging again. The running is starting good my lungs are struggling which is like my own little sign to (tell me I’m an idiot). My problem is this one.. Even though I started reducing my amount of smoking and increasing the jogging, the coughing and the headache is horrible afterward. What can I do to make the transition easier? Will it last long?

wheezing at the gym, smoking cessation, coughing up phlegm?

December 19th, 2009 : Category: News

I just got back from the gym. I am 16 days smoke free. I started exercising the day I quit…some days seem better than others. I just started coughing stuff up yesterday. Today I was coughing so hard and wheezing that I couldn’t finish my 30 minute cardio workout. Should I be worried about the wheezing bit? I feel like others have had trouble breathing but not wheezing. It is one hour later and I am still wheezing a bit and still coughing up mucus…yuk!

If smoking is known to be an addiction, why doesn’t the gov use the rev from cig tax for smoking cessation ?

December 17th, 2009 : Category: News

The state that I live in is proposing a per pack increase on cigarettes. I called the governors office to ask about the plans for the revenue from that tax. Not one dime was going into any kind of fund to help smokers quit.

I asked about giving smokers smoking cessation aides such as gum, patches, Chantix through the public health system. Nope. I asked about ANY programs to help people quit smoking. NONE.

So, isn’t taxing cigarettes and not putting the money into any program to help smokers quit basically milking people with an addiction?

Wouldn’t it be the "right" thing to do to use the money for smoking cessation programs to help people quit?

Isn’t that what the anti-smoking people want…for people to not smoke?

Or do they enjoy the benefits of the money that is generated from taxing people with an addiction?
